Fender Vintage Mustang-Jagstang Hybrid USA/CIJ – 1965 – Faded Fiesta Red
Check out this unholy beautiful marriage of old and even older. This heavily patinated 1965 original Fender Mustang neck with a fresh re-fret is paired with an early 2000s Jagstang body refinished in glorious Faded Fiesta Red. The neck pickup is a Curtis Novak vintage wind, the bridge is a hot humbucking Dimarzio DF100 Super-distortion, one of Kurt’s favorites. An older 1990s Jagstang pickguard holds the aftermarket pickups and phase controls, it has a beautiful warm yellow glow to it that sets off the pink of the guitar body. It sure would look good on stage, needless to say, the guitar absolutely screams with the hot humbucker and cool vintage single. It makes for a hugely versatile instrument that punches well above its weight. New bone nut, vintage style wiring, old-school white button tuners add vintage style to this hybrid creation. The faded Fiesta Red color is amazing, like fatty salmon flesh, it really makes the guitar pop visually. Putting a humbucker in the bridge position of a Mustang changes the game, sonically speaking. Comes with a tremolo arm in a 1960’s Mustang case in good condition that is missing a catch but has a racecar style belt that holds it closed securely. The guitar looks good in it. Weighs 7lbs and 8oz, setup on 10s.
Condition
Overall, very good condition, presents as excellent – like calling a relic pristine. Not new, not pristine, this was never meant to be. A sick collection of old, new and vintage parts. The poly finish on the Jagstang body shows very light wear around the controls and bridge on an older refinish. The neck pocket has a little too much shoulder on the bass side, the neck and body were made forty years and five thousand miles apart – they weren’t designed to fit. Easy to live with, not something you focus on. The neck shows plenty of wear and patina, the fretboard was leveled to take out most of the divots from play, the frets are new vintage narrow/tall. Most of the hardware is modern, pickups and wiring are not original – modern vintage cloth type. The neck work was completed by the guys at Eric’s Guitars in Van Nuys, California. The body was repainted for a different project in 2020 by Pat Wilkins of Van Nuys, a very fine maker of basses and painter of fine finishes.
